Cinelândia Square, as it is commonly called, is a major public square located in the center of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The official name of the famous square is Praça Floriano Peixoto, named after the second president of Brazil. In 1910, a monument to Marshal Floriano Peixoto was erected and placed directly in the middle of the square. The monument is made of bronze and was designed by renowned sculptor Eduardo Sá and cast in France. The monument portrays scenes of pivotal events in Brazilian history. There is a second bronze statue in Cinelândia Square, located in front of the Municipal Theatre, that pays hommage to the prolific 19th century Brazilian Composer Carlos Gomes.
