Rio Tips!
Rio’s theater scene is very interesting even if you don’t speak the language. There is always a musical, opera or ballet that you will enjoy watching. The performing arts season lasts from April through December, with the best time to catch a new production being April when theater companies hold premieres. In addition, plenty of outdoor concerts, movies on the beach and other special events are held at Copacabana. Tickets for most performing arts concerts are relatively expensive.
Theatro Municipal (Municipal Theatre)
This magnificent theater is one of the country’s most important theaters and is now home to the Petrobras Symphony Orchestra and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. The interiors of the theater are as luxurious as its façades with many sculptures and paintings by national and international artists. You can settle in for an evening of opera, ballet and listen to some world renowned ballet companies and orchestras such as the Kirov Ballet Company, Berlin Philharmonic and Brazilian Symphony Orchestra who have graced the stage on many occasions. The Municipal Theatre is located at Cinelândia on Praça Marechal Floriano in Centro.
Canecão – Rio’s Best Music Venue
The biggest names on Brazil’s music scene perform at Canecão so don’t miss a night at the theater for some beautiful, soothing classics. The theater seats 5,000 but the tables up front give you the best view of the stage. Head right for Av. Venceslau Brás 215 for a night of music with the cariocas.
Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil
Even jazz greats like Ron Carter perform at the center which includes a Portuguese-language theater. The center hosts recitals, concerts and dance performances on a regular basis. Apart from an auditorium and theater, there are exhibition rooms and a cinema hall as well. The center is located at Rua Primeiro de Março,66 – Centro.
Plenty of small theaters stage local as well as popular national acts. The most wonderful thing about these theaters is that you pay very little for plenty of entertainment.
