Surfing is very much a part of Rio’s beach culture with people carrying surfboards a common sight. On vacation, this is a good sign if you want to go surfing, since there are plenty of professionals who offer lessons for all beginner as well as advanced levels.
Best Places to Surf
Surfing boards are cheap in Rio if you do want to own one. However, boards can be rented and are often included in the price for a lesson. Surfing schools can be found all along Rio’s shoreline. Macumba and Recreio beaches are among the best places with fantastic wave breaks, so grabbing a few surfing lessons at these beaches are worth it.
Best Time to Surf
June to September is the best time for surfing in Rio. The beaches are less crowded and you have plenty of room to make the most of the waves without banging into someone else. The beaches are packed from December to March, which means you need to be more careful when you venture out into the waters.
Arpoador at Night
Arpoador experiences consistent waves between 1 and 3 meters, which is good for surfing. However, an early morning or late afternoon trip is recommended since the beach fills up around noon. As long as you have a local guide, you could get a bit adventurous and try a bit of night surfing at Arpoador, which has lights during the night. On windy days, you can catch some big waves at Ipanema and Leblon as well.
