Rio: A Haven for Art and Artists
While Rio may be famous for its beach culture, the city prides itself in being home to a number of artists and famous works of art by renowned artists such as Bruno Giorgi, Di Cavalcanti and Maria Martins. Some of the leading art galleries are located in the city which includes the Museum of Modern Art and the popular Museum of Fine Art. From traditional, to contemporary and the Fine Arts, Rio has plenty of stunning works of art for you to admire.
Museum of Modern Art (MAM)
The museum was founded by a group of art enthusiasts in 1948. Several generations of Brazilian artists have been influenced by the museum, which also plays an active role in portraying the city’s cultural scene. The impressive piece of architecture is located in the heart of Flamengo Park. MAM is home to over 4,000 pieces contributed by Gilberto Chateaubriand and over 12,0000 film titles that include some of the rarest. Art workshops and exhibitions are held throughout the year.
Museum of International Naive Art (Museu Internacional de Arte Naïf)
On your way to the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, a stop at the biggest museum of naïf art is a must for every art aficionado. Artists from all over the globe are well represented with a collection of over 8,000 pieces on exhibit at the museum, which includes some outstanding works by Brazilian naïve artists. If you are an admirer of Henri Rousseau, the first naïve artist, then this is the place to buy some of his replica paintings. The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 13 pm to 17 pm (temporary) and is located at Rua Cosme Velho, 561.
Museu da Chacara do Céu
This museum is situated in the historical district that has the largest concentration of art studios and galleries. Formerly the residence of Castro Maya, a great patron of art, the museum now exhibits his personal collection of works by Picasso, Dali and Miro, along with Brazilian artists like Guignard and Portinari, to name a few. Don’t miss the oil paintings and drawings by 19th century artists that make up the Brasiliana collection.
