Amsterdam Sauer Museum of Rare Minerals and Precious Stones in Rio de Janeiro
Situated in the Ipanema neighborhood of the South Zone (Zona Sul) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Amsterdam Sauer Museum of Rare Minerals and Precious Stones was founded in 1989 and stands as the single-most complete museum collection of privately-owned gemstones in all of South America. The impressive collection is the product of nearly seventy years of hard work and dedication on the part of French-immigrant Jules Roger Sauer, who was a pioneer in mining and marketing fine Brazilian gems.
The collection consists of more than three thousand gemstones of different types, from rough to cut gemstones, emeralds to rubellites to aquamarines, tourmalines, and imperial topazes. The Amsterdam Sauer Museum is recognized worldwide for its collection of precious stones, some of which hold titles in the Guinness Book of Records. The museum also boasts many internationally-acclaimed jewelry that have won numerous prizes.
The Amsterdam Sauer Museum of Rare Minerals and Precious Stones is the only museum to feature replicas of emerald, aquamarine and tourmaline mines and is a truly unique experience for travelers visiting the Marvelous City of Rio de Janeiro. Admission is FREE of charge and the museum is open Monday-Friday from 10am to 7pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.
