Sugarloaf Mountain or Pão de Açúcar as it is called locally, is an iconic granite mountain peak in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil situated on the mouth of the Guanabara Bay. The Sugarloaf sits on a peninsula that stretches into the Atlantic Ocean and rises an astonishing 396 metres, or 1,299 feet, above the harbor of Rio de Janeiro. The name “sugarloaf” comes from the similarities in shape of the mountain and the traditional shape of concentrated refined loafs of sugar.
The cable car at the Sugarloaf in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is one of the world’s most famous attractions, and has welcomed more than 37 million visitors since its inception in 1912. With each car carrying an average 65 passengers, the cable car ride at the Sugarloaf happens in two separate stages, each taking 3 minutes. The most beautiful sites are taken in from atop the Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf Mountain. Tours depart every 20 minutes between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. The fare is R$53 per adult and R$26 per child under 12 years of age for a round-trip ticket to Pão de Açúcar. An insider’s tip: Go in the evening to watch the sunset! No other view quite compares!
