Rio is a Marvelous City
Rio de Janeiro is a city of wonder both in its surroundings and its people
A famous comedian once said: “Darling, you look marvelous!!” He might have been speaking about Rio de Janeiro. This is a city with so many adjectives it puts a thesaurus to shame. Beautiful, breathtaking, fun, friendly, exciting and yes, marvelous! Rio de Janeiro is a city of wonder both in its surroundings and its people. There is no other place like it on Earth!
The View
Considered one of the natural wonders of the world, Rio sits at the mouth of a harbor surrounded by forest covered mountains. Sugar Loaf, Tijuca Forest and Corcovado act as sentinels protecting the beauty of the harbor from all who might try to harm her. And overlooking it all with arms outstretched is the imposing statue of Christ the Redeemer looking lovingly out over a marvelous city He helped create.
The People
The local residents of Rio call themselves Cariocas. It is a Tupi Indian word meaning white houses. This is what the Tupis called the houses the Portuguese built and eventually it came to mean the Portuguese themselves. The Cariocas are a much laid back happy people. Time is not rigid and being late for a non-business meeting is perfectly acceptable. The Cariocas are also very friendly and will speak with anyone. They also love their soccer and footvolley.
The Celebrations
Aside from the people and the view, the parties make Rio de Janeiro a marvelous city. The Carnival is the biggest party in the world. Street parties, concerts, balls and samba school parades all keep the city dancing for a week. New Years Eve welcomes a million plus people to Copacabana beach to enjoy the fireworks and ring in the New Year.
The Attractions
There is nothing more marvelous than some of the major tourist attractions in the area. The beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana are famous world wide and filled with beautiful people, pristine white sand and cool ocean waters. The views from Sugar Loaf and Corcovado are jaw-dropping.
This is a city, top to bottom, filled with marvelous sights, sounds and people. The beauty and joy are so infectious; visitors cannot help but to feel blissfully happy during their stay in Rio.
