Arenas Around Town
The wonderfully diverse culture of Rio de Janeiro is the driving force behind the preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The cosmopolitan attitude and the infectious energy of its young people have provided the impetus needed to plan and prepare for this wondrous event.
Rio de Janeiro is ahead of most Olympic host cities in that many of its venues had been built for the 2007 Pan and Parapan American Games. The athletic stadium for field sports, aquatic center for swimming and diving and the arena for wheelchair basketball and gymnastics have already been completed. There is also a velodrome, equestrian center and shooting center that are ready to be used by Olympic athletes.
Getting It All Ready
Renovations to the infamous Maracanã stadium are underway and The Olympic Training Center is currently being built. In addition, public transportation is going to be expanded and many of the neighborhoods around the venues will be updated. An X Park is also being constructed for the youth of Rio. It will host the more extreme sports. The park is being constructed in Deodoro because it has the highest population of young people. Rio’s Port in also undergoing renovation for the olympics, the area will have have walking boulevards, aquarium, museums, stores and moany other leisure attractions. It’s rennovation will be inspired on the Buenos Aires and Barcelona Port’s restoration. Many hotels are going to be constructed in Barra da Tijuca and South Zone area.
The Olympic Village
Perhaps one of the most spectacular plans will be a single village to house all the coaches, athletes and officials. The complex will be within walking distance of most of the athletic sites. The village itself is going to be located on a lake and will have a garden park for quiet reflection, training areas to stay in shape and a private ocean beach to enjoy some rest and relaxation. What’s most notable about the Olympic Village is that it is expected to be completely powered by a manmade waterfall off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the Solar City Tower. The 345-foot tower will have an observation deck at the top making it a spectacular site in and of itself.
Party Time
Rio de Janeiro is known for its party atmosphere. When one thinks of Rio, the celebration of the Carnival immediately comes to mind. This party atmosphere carries over to daily life with evenings filled with dancing, drinking and Samba music. The Rua Carioca will be prepared for the Olympic athletic village with first class restaurants, live bands and excellent shopping.
The jubilant atmosphere of the Carnival will carry over to the celebration of the 2016 Olympic Games. Athletes, visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the sporting events in the most advanced technological arenas in the world. This will truly be a celebration of the world.
