Used to be Machado de Assis’s home, one of Brazilians greatest writers
Café Hartmann was once the home of one of Brazil’s greatest writers, Machado de Assis. It’s said that the author was a lover of fine sweets, which might explain much of the menu here at Café Hartmann. The coffee shop is as well known for its delicacies as it is for its mild coffees. They offer truffles, cakes, pastries, raisin cakes, and fine chocolates. They cost a bit more than store-bought sweets, but they are much richer in taste and texture. Somehow, they always go perfectly with whatever flavor of coffee you have, too.
